Matte lacquering begins with sanding the walnut before a thin lacquer coat is applied and cured to a low-sheen film. The unfilled coat settles into the walnut's open pores and fibre structure rather than sitting as a level layer above it. The result is a flat, subdued surface that still reads the timber's own grain relief beneath the pigmented coat.
These PBR texture maps carry that relationship directly: the clearcoat layer works with the normal map to follow the wood's fibre structure rather than describing a level film, so reflections stay soft and break naturally across the grain.
